Klacking Keypad Overview (Eurorack)

What is a Klacking Keypad?

The Klacking Keypad is a eurorack module that allows the user to interact with their modular system using momentary mechanical keyswitches and a simple, yet flexible interface that can integrate into any patch. Use the Klacking Keypad as a performance tool to inject humanization into monotonous patterns. Use it as a tool for sound design experiments. Do some finger drumming (you may need to convert gates to triggers for some modules). There are so many uses, I don't think I have thought of them all yet. Here are a few more off the top of my head:

  • > Send gates to your gate inputs
  • > Control effect modules
  • > Progress sequencers
  • > Open VCAs
  • > Trigger envelopes
  • > Send modulation signals
  • > Reset those modules that have resets
  • > Experiment

Basic Functions

The Klacking Keypad is a tactile momentary switch and gate user interface that can send gates or pass through input signals with the press of a keyswitch. 9 mechanical keyswitches, each with their own input and output may be used as either a gate or switch, depending on which inputs have jacks plugged in.

Internal Gate Signal

The Klacking Keypad has an internal constant voltage signal that is normalled to input 1. If nothing is plugged into the input 1 jack, you will get a gate signal on the output 1 jack when the keyswitch is pressed. This internal signal is copied to ascending outputs (2-9) until an input is connected. Plugging a jack into any input will interupt the gate signal normalization and the input signal will be copied to ascending outputs.

Patch Examples

The graphic above demonstrates the flexibility of the Klacking Keypad as both a gate and momentary switch. Inputs 1-3 have no inputs, so you get gate outs on outputs 1-3. Input 4 has a cable jack connected, Input 4’s signal is copied to outputs 4-7. Inputs 8 and 9 each have their own inputs that go to their respective outputs.

Let's say you want 6 gate outputs and you have three modulation sources to pass through the Klacking Keypad. In this case you would connect a patch cable from the outputs of 1-6 to 6 gate inputs in your modular system. Then plug your modulation source cables into inputs 7-9, and outputs 7-9 into your modular system. You now have something fun and powerful to perform with!
